THOMAS CAREY, PhD · SCIENCE EDUCATOR
I teach science.
I build with AI.
I teach science at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School. My eight years of full-time teaching span general chemistry and physics through advanced organic and inorganic chemistry. I also teach Preflight, our college study-skills course, lead cadet leadership activities, and mentor military instructors.
Using AI to prepare courses and build software has expanded what I can learn and do. I want students to develop the knowledge and judgment to pursue ambitious work of their own.
SELECTED SOFTWARE
I built Arete for a major revision of Colorado Springs School District 11’s policies, bringing drafts, amendments, and board decisions together throughout the review.

Learning that lasts.
I redesigned Skills Track Chemistry around clear instruction, retrieval practice, and spaced review. Following the redesign, final-exam averages across two cohorts were nearly twelve percentage points higher than across the preceding three cohorts on similar exams.

Ideas into working software.
I’ve built applications to organize district policy review, plan training from completed workouts, and run a meeting. AI helps me learn unfamiliar material and turn an idea into something useful. That experience informs what I want students to attempt with these tools.

From faculty to district.
I have course-directed science courses for approximately 200 cadet candidates, developed common advising lessons and trained faculty advisors, and directed new-staff onboarding. I mentor military instructors through shared materials, lesson observation, and feedback. As president of the Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education, I also bring experience in public policy and institutional accountability.
